For years, a simple Facebook post could do something extremely valuable for an independent artist: turn attention into a click.
A fan discovers a song, sees a post, taps a link and lands on Spotify, YouTube, Bandcamp, a ticketing page or the artist’s own website. That small journey has quietly become part of the modern music business.
Now, that journey may be changing.
Following the launch of Meta One, some Facebook Pages and professional accounts are being shown restrictions that limit them to two external link posts per month unless they move to a paid plan. Social Media Today reported that Meta has expanded an earlier test of this restriction, while other reports indicate that affected users may need higher Meta One tiers for additional link publishing.
Meta officially describes Meta One as a subscription service offering creators and businesses enhanced professional tools, including advanced publishing features and links in organic posts and Reels. The company says availability and features can vary by region and account.
For musicians, the bigger story is not simply the price of another subscription.
It is who controls the road between the artist and the fan.
An independent artist may have followers on Facebook, but the actual business happens elsewhere: a streaming service, ticketing platform, merchandise store or personal website. If sending fans outside the platform becomes restricted, artists could increasingly be pushed toward keeping audiences inside Meta’s ecosystem.
That creates a new strategic problem for the creator economy: having followers is not the same as owning access to them.
And this is where the music industry should pay attention.
Artists have spent years diversifying their distribution, streaming and social presence to avoid depending on a single platform. But if social platforms begin monetising the ability to send audiences elsewhere, the next battle may not be over streams or followers.
It could be over the click itself.
For independent musicians, that tiny blue link may suddenly be one of the most valuable pieces of real estate on the internet.
